VS-R265 adopted for live two-way internet streaming broadcast in five locations around the world

The VS-R265 was used to stream the online symposium on the 75th Anniversary of the Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki on August 9th, 2020. Hosted by Japan, this global event connected five different locations around the world on both sides, and the event footage was simultaneously distributed worldwide via YouTubeLIVE and Facebook Live.

While traveling and flights are being restricted globally, the International Humanitarian Organization, the Nagasaki City and Prefecture, hosted an online event for the 75th Anniversary of the Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki in advance of the Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 9th.
Our company, Startline Co., Ltd., was in charge of the two-way live broadcasting at five locations around the world, the YouTubeLIVE stream with English audio, and the Facebook Live stream with Japanese audio.
The broadcasting locations were confirmed just a week before the event, and it was all a very nervous but exciting experience since it was essential to perform a test connection with each location at least 1 time. The final connection venues were Tokyo, Nagasaki, Geneva, Seoul, and Washington, D.C.

The connection with the five locations was made one-to-one, and the audio was centrally controlled by a digital mixer using a Dante-compatible audio I/O interface. Centralized control by Dante was essential to prevent audio from bouncing and howling with each location since it can accurately set the so-called mix-minus. As for the video, we inserted subtitles or combined the footage sent from the connected locations. This video composition enables the creation of elaborated screens, which is somewhat difficult to do with video/web meeting applications alone.

 

Stable operation as a top priority - selecting a computer-less encoder for live streaming

To live stream this two-way live broadcast to the general audience, we used YouTubeLIVE for the English channel stream, and Facebook Live for the Japanese audio stream.

For the first term, the original audio was in Japanese, and in English for the second.

Each term was broadcasted live with the simultaneous interpretation audio mixed with the original. Since those are different languages and one encoder cannot broadcast to multiple sites, we used two VS-R265: one for FacebookLIVE and one for YouTubeLIVE. We monitored each channel's video and audio one step before those come together in the VS-R265.

VS-R265 advantages:
  1. 1.Management and monitoring can be done from a browser within the network built in the area of the technical staff.
  2. 2.It requires only a small space for installation and is low power consumption.
  3. 3.It has a reliable sound quality.

 

In conclusion

With online streaming gaining attention nowadays, one of our team's goal is to improve the overall quality of our services with simple and small equipment within the customer's budget. We try not to do too much of a complex system design when it comes to streaming such as adding a back-up system for risk prevention or high-end/high-quality equipment which is more likely to be seen in live broadcasting environments. So for that, the VS-R265, which operates stably without a PC, has become a valuable choice for us.
